Welcome to UES Physical Education

Dear Parents / Guardians:

The physical education program at Union Elementary School is based on the philosophy of “Fitness for Life.”  Your child will be involved in meaningful physical education lessons, which are aligned with the physical education National Standards.

Our goals are:

  • To develop every student’s level of physical fitness.
  • To promote self-satisfaction from giving one’s best effort, regardless of winning or losing.
  • To help students develop a passion for activities they can do outside of school and throughout their lives.
  • To help students develop cooperative skills and work well with others.

The expectations for PE class include:
  • All students will try their best to demonstrate the school-wide expectations of: Be Kind, Be Responsible, and Be Safe.
  • All students must wear sneakers during their physical education class. This rule is for their own safety as well as the safety of other students. We have extra sneakers for students to borrow if they forget them on PE days.

Check out our website for information on our monthly units, as well as special events and photos of ongoing class activities at: uesfitnessforlife.blogspot.com. We will also be sending out a monthly newsletter with important information and updates about the physical education program at UES.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us or stop by to see us at school.  On the back of this paper you will find our yearly plan. Check out what your students will be learning throughout the year. Thank you for taking the time to read this with your child to ensure a positive learning environment. This is going to be a fun-filled year!

Yours in fitness for life,

Dear Families,

THANK YOU for helping to make our Jump Rope for Heart program an incredible success!  We are glad to report that we raised $9,855.00 this year. Inches away from our goal of last year's $10,000.00. We couldn't have done it without our kids, families, and teachers support! We anticipate "thank you" gifts from the American Heart Association to arrive at UES between the end of April and early May. THANK YOU FOR BEING HEART HEROES!

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

Did you know heart diseases and stroke are the #1 and #4 killers in America today?  They account as for many deaths as all other causes combined.  Every day, 2,500 people in America have a heart attack and 2,100 people suffer a stroke. Every year 36,000 children are born with a heart defect. Jump Rope for Heart donations are essential to the development of lifesaving research.

UES Physical Education is once again proud to partner with the American Heart Association to teach kids jump rope skills at an early age to get kids to be moving for life! Our fundraising donations teaches kids community service and helping kids with special hearts!  Way to go UES OWLS!

Thanks to our families for helping your child to raise donations! Envelopes are due no later than Monday, April 10 2017. Please deliver them to MJ or Emmanuel Riby-Williams in the PE office off the gym. Thanks!

March Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope this newsletter finds you well and in great spirits. March is a very exciting month because of a special activity that occurs for our students.  Students have the opportunity to participate in Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart is a successful educational event held every year in thousands of schools throughout America. It is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America).  When your child participates in Jump Rope for Heart, he/she:

  • Learns about the importance of the heart, how it works and how to take care of it.
  • Helps kids with special hearts.
  • Feels good for making a difference in people’s lives!

The proceeds from Jump Rope for Heart are used to fund cardiovascular research and educational programs that help prevent heart and blood vessel diseases, America’s number one killer. It’s a great way to introduce students to the concept of community service while learning how to take care of their hearts.

While all students will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart, only grades 2-4 are encouraged to participate in the fundraising for the American Heart Association (AHA).  The culminating activity for the Jump Rope for Heart event is to have a Jump Rope Day. The day will include all the different types of rope jumping they have learned throughout the month, and a mini-jump rope competition.  Students will be able to choose whatever jump rope activity they like during this class period. We look forward to this culminating activity! Please help support your student through this fundraiser! The AHA packet for students to participate and collect donations is attached to this newsletter.  This needs to be turned into Mr. Williams and MJ no later than Monday April 10, 2017.

We hope you are excited as we are to support our students in this important experience! If you have any questions, please let us know.

Upcoming events:
  • Bike safety unit for grades 2-4,  March 13 - 17 (cancelled) due to snow!
  • Family Fitness Night - May 5, 2017, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Sincerely,

Emmanuel Riby-Williams and MJ Jennings

Snowshoeing adventures!

Physical Education February Newsletter!

This year has been off to a great start in Physical Education Class. The younger grades (K-1) just completed a unit on striking, volleying and dribbling. While the upper grades focused on juggling skills using a wide-variety of materials.  Students in grades k-1 were able to apply the striking, volleying and dribbling skills that they practiced in PE class to the sports of hockey, baseball, tennis, volleyball and basketball. Our goal was that students will be able to manipulate an object with control and strike an object with a mature striking pattern. While grades 2-4  focused primarily on juggling one, two or three pieces of equipment. They also created a routine to perform in front of their peers.  We were looking for creativity, and wanted students to be able to work cooperatively in developing, practicing and performing their routines.

February is heart-health month, and on record, February in Vermont is the snowiest month.  The snow opens up numerous possibilities for physical education that are only available in the winter.  Some popular activities that students will explore during PE class this coming month include; snowshoeing, indoor snowboarding and outdoor cooperative activities.

Winter outdoor fun ties in with our instruction on heart rate, cardiorespiratory endurance as well as locomotor movements.  Snowshoeing is an intense cardiorespiratory activity that reinforces proper walking form.  It requires individuals to pick up their feet rather than shuffling and to have a high knee drive when running.  Students will need to be able to work cooperatively with others. We also look for students to exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.

Union Elementary School will be having our school-wide and award winning “Jump Rope for Heart” activities in the gym during the month of March. More information about this event will be sent out soon.

If we can be of help, please feel to call us at school 225-8264. Or e-mail us at either emmanuelr@mpsvt.org or mj@mpsvt.org. Feel free to check our blog: uesfitnessforlife.blogspot.com
Thank you very much for your support at home!
Sincerely,

Emmanuel Riby-Williams and M. Jennings
